On 11 April 1917 Mr. G van Dyk, the principal opened the first small school on Duiwelskloof with the enrolment of 19 boys and 14 girls. Shortly afterwards there were 55 pupils, and on 22 October 1917 there were 72 pupils on the register.
In 1918 Mr. F Barnard was appointed as principal. He was assisted by Ms. MM Marais as assistant. In September 1918, during a school committee meeting, it was decided to open a hostel.
With the flu epidemic of 1918, the school had to close, and the residence was set up as a hospital. As a result, the numbers have reduced to 36 pupils. The same also happened in 1922.
